Morne Steyn Son,Caden Sorrell Death Obituary: Young Athlete Remembered After Tragic Death

Caden Sorrell was remembered by those who knew him as a bright, kind and loving 13-year-old whose presence brought warmth to the people around him. His sudden death has left his family, classmates, teammates and wider North Carolina community struggling to understand a loss that came far too soon.

Caden, an eighth-grade student at Northwest Guilford Middle School in Greensboro, North Carolina, was participating in football practice on August 28, 2026, when he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest after running a lap around the field. He was taken to Cone Health Hospital, where medical teams used intensive measures, including a heart pump and ECMO, in an effort to save his life. Despite those efforts, Caden died on August 30.

His older sister, Vanessa Clark, remembered him as “brilliant, sweet, smart, kind,” saying he made those around him feel loved. Caden wore No. 42 while playing football and was also known for his love of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

His death brought the Northwest Guilford community together for a vigil attended by friends, teammates and supporters. A funeral service was also announced for Ellisboro Baptist Church in Madison.

Caden’s family has said they hope his story can encourage greater awareness of cardiac health among young athletes. His memory now lives on through the people who knew him, loved him and shared his young life.
