Justin Milliken will be remembered for a life shaped by family, service, leadership and a commitment to the community he helped build in St. Johns. A U.S. Army veteran and longtime professional, Milliken was also known locally as the co-owner of Grumpy’s Restaurant, a business he built alongside his wife, Leah.
Milliken died Wednesday, September 9, 2026. His family confirmed that his death was by suicide. He was found deceased at Grumpy’s Restaurant on County Road 210, where deputies from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office responded. Authorities reported no indication of foul play.
For Justin and Leah, Grumpy’s was more than a restaurant. After becoming franchisees in 2020, they opened the St. Johns location at The Fountains at St. Johns in August 2021. The restaurant became a gathering place for local families and an important part of the community.
Before entering the restaurant business, Milliken had an accomplished military career. According to his professional biography, he served as a U.S. Army officer from 1997 to 2001 and attained the rank of captain. His assignments included service as a Special Operations Medical Officer with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment and as a medical intelligence and bioweapons officer with the 1st Ranger Battalion.
After leaving the military, he spent more than two decades in medical-device sales and management and later earned an executive MBA through Cornell University.
Milliken’s passing leaves his wife, family, colleagues and the Grumpy’s community mourning a profound loss. His legacy of service, professional dedication and family commitment will remain part of the St. Johns community he helped serve.
